In the south, Stanthorpe and the granite belt is especially popular as a short breaks destination and many people love to stay among the vineyards and sample the local produce over a long weekend or so. Toowoomba is Queensland's largest country city and is famous for its flower pageants in spring. It is also home to a university and several famous grammar schools.
Most international tourists want to sample the Great Outback and the road from Charleville through Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach and Mt Isa is extremely popular especially with organized tours. Along the way there are many places of interest including the Stockmans Hall of Fame and the Qantas museum in Longreach. The Walkabout Creek hotel made famous in the Crocodile Dundee movies is also on this route and a terrific stopping point for a cold drink. Mt isa is really interesting and is one of Australia’s most prolific mining towns. To its north lies the Gulf of Carpentaria and fishing ports like Karumba where sports fishermen gather to catch the famous Barramundi. There is plenty of wildlife to see on this route with emu and kangaroo being sighted regularly. Closer to the coast, towns like Emerald, Biloela and Mt Morgan are all worth a visit. These lie in the coal mining areas and the gemfields of central Queensland. Inland from Cairns is the Atherton tableland and this is rally popular with tourists. Here you will find areas of virgin rainforest, quiet lakes and fabulous caves and lava tubes. The area is accessed from Cairns which is an ideal base as there is so much to see and do from there. The Daintree rainforest, Cape tribulation, Cooktown and Cape Yorke Peninsular are all accessed from Cairns as well.
